Auditions for Simon Comedy Rumors Coming Soon

The Baytown Little Theater will hold open auditions for the comedy Rumors, by Neil Simon, directed by Mackey Skinner, at the theater, 4328 Hugh Echols Blvd., September 15 & 16, at 7:00 PM. Details of the roles are at this link: Auditions info

Rumors, one of Neil Simon’s most popular and enduring comedies, is a farce in which several affluent couples gather for a dinner party celebrating their hosts’ tenth anniversary. However, they discover there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host – Charley, the deputy mayor of New York City, has shot himself through the earlobe. Comic complications arise when, given everyone’s social status (lawyer, CPA, psychiatrist and a politician), they decide they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events from the local police and the media.  However, the police do arrive demanding to see the host and Lenny (pretending to be Charley) comes downstairs to “explain everything.” Lenny invents a ludicrous, rambling explanation for everything. The police, partly out of exasperation, buy the story and leave the house. The guests, elated at their success, begin to troop upstairs to confront Charley and find out the real story once and for all, when an incredible development occurs!

Auditions will be readings from the script and will be held at 7PM on September 15 and 16 at the Baytown Little Theater, 4328 Hugh Echols Blvd., Baytown, TX   77521. For more information about this production, read Rumors.

Busy Month Has BLT Groups Going in All Directions

20130620-120254.jpg

June, 2013, may go down as one of the busiest in BLT history. With the youth production of John Lennon and Me performing for two weekends (closing with three performances this weekend, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 21, 22, and 23), sandwiching a long and successful trip to Odessa for the Texas Nonprofit Theatres’ annual youth conference, and the abundantly-attended auditions for our summer musical Fiddler on the Roof, set for gala performances July 26, 27, 28, August 2, 3, and 4, and with the culmination of the AACTFest cycle and BLT’s performance of God of Carnage at this prestigious national conference (see the photo above of our display table at the Carmel, IN venue), not to mention the beginning of the summer youth camps being led by Carrie Martin and coordinated by manager Kathryn Saenger, there seems to be no end to important work going on at the Baytown Little Theater. And this list does not even consider ongoing committee work such as the Play-reading Committee, which hosted its first Script Snatch to better acquaint potential directors with plays that this committee has been promoting for future seasons and productions, or the Building and Capital Campaign Committees that continue their important work on the new theater. And I’m sure some other committee and production work is being unintentionally overlooked.

If this list does not convince you that the BLT needs you, and that your contributions are encouraged, indeed coveted, I don’t know what else will. Let us know how you can be involved.

Since the year 2000, the Baytown Little Theater has performed for AACTFest with winning shows that advanced through the ranks of Quad and State. This year the BLT entry, God of Carnage, directed by Taylor Dobbs, advanced from State to Region competition held in LaFayette, Lousiana in March where they won 1st place in Region VI. The cast and crew has advanced to the AACTFest 2013 national competition to be held June 17-23 in Carmel, Indiana.

The talented cast consists of Amy Miller-Martin and Ryan Martin as Veronica and Michael Novak, Chelsea Denard, and Kenny Haney as Annette and Alan Raleigh. In addition the brilliant backstage crew includes Stephanie Whitley, Stephen Bent, Ryan Marshall and Dawn Daily. Jamie Garza also worked on crew for the festivals leading up to nationals. This talented group of people dedicated their time and energies to succeed at the highest level possible in AACT Fest 2013.

The play, written by Yasmina Reza, is a comedy about two pairs of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos.

Suggested for mature audiences only.
