Teen Workshop Touts Talent

The BLT annual summer youth workshops concluded Friday with performances at Gentry Junior School by the participating teens. In a series of monologs and scenes, titled “A Potpourri of Plays,” directed by Carrie McRay, including two readers’ theatre selections, the young talents demonstrated that they had made excellent use of the past two weeks of their summer vacations.

Cameron Lieck began the performance with a monolog on “Stage Fright”. Next, Logan Neely held the stage with his presentation of “The Long Way Home,” about a young man who discovers the best way to avoid a dangerous threat in his neighborhood. This was followed by Lieck & Neely combining their acting gifts in a scene titled “Bums,” during which they scattered among the audience to beg donations. After other monologs by Lieck, a Anahuac High School student, and Neely, a Goose Creek Memorial sophomore, the performance concluded with readers’ theatre versions of “Seven Minutes in Heaven” and “The Tutor,” in which the students were supported by an appearance of BLT summer college intern Megan Thomas, a senior at Stephen F. Austin University.

Congratulations to the workshop participants. We hope to see them on the BLT stage in the near future.

The Baytown Little Theater was recognized recently by the Baytown Junior Forum with a donation from the proceeds of their fund-raising and community support efforts. Presenting the check on behalf of the Junior Forum is Jeannette West, Vice President (left). The BLT was represented at the award presentation by theater manager Kathryn Saenger, center, and youth program director John Morales.

This donation will support the youth programs of the BLT, including their recent performance at the Youth Conference of Texas Nonprofit Theatres in Lewisville, Texas. This was the 13th year that the BLTeens have participated in this statewide youth theatre gathering. Groups from community and youth theatre groups across Texas met June 6 through 10 at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theatre to enjoy workshop class sessions taught by professionals and performances by the participating companies. The BLTeens, under the direction of Morales, performed the musical Starmites Lite.

Youth summer camps continue next week. See the post below regarding the session beginning next Monday, June 18, for grades 7 through 12.

Dixie Swim Club has BLT “Diving” Into Summer

The Baytown Little Theater will present its first production of the popular comedic playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten. The Dixie Swim Club features five Southern women whose friendships began as members of the college swim club, and they gather for a long weekend in August every year to renew and recharge. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. “The Dixie Swim Club” focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years.

The Baytown Little Theater will open its summer offering June 8, with performances continuing June 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, & 24. Friday & Saturday performances are 8:00 PM, and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 PM. All tickets are $15.00. Order tickets online or call the box office at 281-424-7617.
